     United States and Territories

To think about the United States and its territories as the Arabia descended into the mud it is useful to consider one map from the Euro-American point of view and another map from the Native point of view.

In the first map the red and grey areas are the existing states of the union. The differentiation between the "free" states in red and the "slave" states in grey reflects the deep divisions and passionate debate of the slavery question. The "united" part of United States is not apparent. The territories are the green and the areas without color.

This next map shows the change in Native lands from 1775 to 1992. By 1850, just six years before the Arabia went down, the series of anti-Native steps, including the Indian Removal Act of 1830, had been successful in forcing Natives to the west.
